The Origin of New Years Day
Chinese New Years Day,according to legend, originated from Zhuanxu, one of the three emperors and five emperors, and has a history of over 4000 years. The term "New Years Day" first appeared in the "Book of Jin": "Emperor Zhuan regarded the first month of Mengxia as the yuan, but in fact,it was the spring of New Years Day in Zhengshuo.".During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, there was also a record in Xiao Ziyuns poem "Jieya" that goes "Four Seasons New Years Day,Wanshou Early Spring Dynasty.".
The first day of the first lunar month in China was referred to as "New Years Day".Yuan means "beginning" and "beginning",while Dan refers to "day".New Years Day is collectively referred to as the "initial day",which is the first day of the year.It was also very inconsistent before Emperor Wu of Han when the first day of the first lunar month was counted. Therefore, the New Years Day months and days throughout history are not consistent. The Xia Dynastys Xia calendar used Meng Xi Yue(January)as the first month, the Shang Dynastys Yin calendar used the twelfth month(December)as the first month, and the Zhou Dynastys Zhou calendar used the winter month(November)as the first month. After the unification of China by Emperor Qin Shi Huang,Yang Chun Yue(October)was designated as the first lunar month, and the first day of October was designated as New Years Day.Starting from Emperor Wu of Han,it was not until the end of the Qing Dynasty that Meng Xiyue(January)was designated as the first lunar month, and the first day of Meng Xiyue(the first day of the first lunar month in the Xia calendar)was called New Years Day.But this is the summer calendar, also known as the lunar or lunar calendar, and not what we call New Years Day today.
The Xinhai Revolution overthrew the rule of the Qing Dynasty, and representatives of provincial governors held a meeting in Nanjing, deciding to use the Gregorian calendar. The first day of the first lunar month was called "Spring Festival",and the first day of January in the Gregorian calendar was called "New Years Day".However,it was not officially announced and named at that time.On September 27,1949,before the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, the first plenary session of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference decided to use the Gregorian calendar, also known as the Gregorian calendar,to record the year, and called January 1st "New Years Day".
Nowadays, most countries in the world adopt the internationally recognized Gregorian calendar, with January 1st as the New Years Day.
Legendary stories
Legend has it that during the prosperous era of Yao and Shun over 4000 years ago,Emperor Yao was diligent in governing and doing many good things for the people during his reign, and was highly loved by the people. However, due to his sons lack of talent and immaturity,he did not pass on the throne to his own son,but passed it on to Shun, who had both moral character and talent.Yao said to Shun,"You must pass on the throne well in the future, and I will rest in peace after my death." Later,Shun passed on the throne to Yu,who had made contributions to the flood control.Yu,like Shun, also loved the people and did many good deeds for them, all of which were very loved and respected by people.Later, people regarded the day when Emperor Shun worshipped heaven and earth and the late Emperor Yao after Yaos death as the beginning of the year, and called the first day of the first lunar month "New Years Day" or "Yuanzheng",which is the ancient New Years Day.
Throughout history, emperors have held celebrations, ceremonies, and prayers on New Years Day,such as offering sacrifices to gods and ancestors, writing door couplets and hanging Spring Festival couplets, writing auspicious characters, and dancing dragon lanterns.Folk activities such as worshiping gods and Buddha, ancestor worship, pasting Spring Festival couplets, setting off firecrackers, observing the New Year, eating reunion meals, and numerous "social fires" have gradually formed. The poet Xin Lan of the Jin Dynasty once wrote a poem called "Yuanzheng": "Yuanzheng marks the beginning of the festival, and Jiaqing begins here.It is a feast for thousands of years, and Xiaodatong is joyful." It records the scene of celebrating New Years Day.
