2024年自考英語二預(yù)測試題

  React to Difficulties

In life you will constantly be facing challenges, times when it’s tough to feel confident about what will happen in the future. Times like these will have different degrees of intensity and duration. The greater the degree and the longer the duration, the greater the fear and sense of uncertainty will be.

As many of you know, the economy seems to be in a downward spiral right now. Today alone, trillions of dollars are being wiped out in a matter of days. People’s retirement funds are being cut in double digit percentages. Many are facing job losses in a time when they need income the most. In times like these,it’s a real challenge to have any optimism and confidence that things are going to be better in the near future.

I read an article where a financial expert stated if he went all in with his money today, he’ll be better off six months from today since markets will always rebound, but added he will have many restless nights and will be constantly wondering "what if this time it’s different?"

It’s sometimes difficult to stay positive and motivated to work on your goals especially when all around you there are people so pessimistic about, well, everything in general. People are cutting back on everything. Conversations around the dinner table and water cooler are increasingly about the state of the economy.

Ok, enough negative talk. If you notice, you have some people reacting negatively while others are acting positively. Here’s what makes the difference. You get what you focus on. You can either think about how bad you have it and feel like a victim,or you can use these challenges as a reason to step up and grow from them.

Yes, things look like economy will get worse. The reality, however, really depends on how you look at it and react to this situation.

Like any challenge in life it’s not what actually happens that will determine the outcome it’s what you decide to do about it.

In life people are always troubled with challenges.( )

  Walking

I live about a half-mile from two gas stations, two miles from Walmart and less than two miles from the mall. These businesses are well within walking distance, but I don’t walk to any of them—I drive. This may seem surprising, but many Americans practice the same habit.

According to the 2010 "National Bicycle and Walking Study" by the U. S. Department of Transportation, 72 percent of trips that are less than three miles in length are made by vehicle. Short distances can be easily traversed by foot rather than by car but only a quarter of Americans are choosing walking or biking as their means of transportation.

A December 2012 study by Gregg L. Furie published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, says that about 25 percent of Americans participate in active transportation. Active transportation is defined as human-powered transportation, such as walking or biking. The results of the study showed that those who participated in active transportation had a lower BMI lower waist circumference, and lower odds of developing hypertension and diabetes.

The "Vital Signs Walking Among Adults" study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages adults to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. However, about half of all adults do not get the recommended amount of exercise, and about one-third reported no physical activity at all The study also showed that walkers were three times more likely to meet the recommended amount of exercise than non-walkers.

In addition to the health benefits associated with active transportation, there are many less obvious benefits as well. The American Automobile Association’s(AAA) annual "Your Driving Costs" study for 2012 revealed that the average annual cost for owning and operating a sedan is $ 8,946. Compared with essentially cost-free foot travel or the $120 annual cost of owning a bicycle, choosing active trans portation saves you money.

Walking is an easily accessible activity that can be done anywhere anytime with anyone. By implementing walking as a primary form of commuting, people can increase their healt and decrease their spending. Participating in human-powered transportation also removes some of the stresses of driving from people’s lives. By walking, people can avoid traffic congestion, stop signs, and road rage. Realistically, walking to work could not only be more beneficial, but also more practical than driving.

So, put down the car keys, lace up your walking shoes and prepare yourself for a commute that few choose to experience--walking.

From the first paragraph we can know that( )

A.the writer is too lazy to walk to work

B.American people prefer driving to walking in spite of the short distance

C.the writer is very lucky to live not far away from gas stations and shopping malls

D.it is very convenient for the writer to go shopping

  12

From the 2010 "National icycle and Walking Study" we can see that. ( )

A.72% of people prefer to drive cars

B.few people like to travel long distances by cars

C.75 % of people choose driving cars as their means of transportation

D.most people prefer to travel short distances on foot

  13

It’s reported that adults don’t do exercises at all. ( )

  A.half

  B.one quarter

  C.two-thirds

  D.one-third

  14

Active transportation not only has health benefits, but also ( )

  A.save money

  B.lower waist circumference

  C.reduces the risks of diabetes

  D.save time

  15

Walking does great good to people like( )

  A.removing stresses

  B.avoiding traffic jams

  C.increasing health and decreasing costs

  D.All of the above

  一、閱讀判斷(第1~10題,每題1分,共10分)

Lacking in Self-Esteem (自尊)? Good for you!

According to psychological and educational theories, self-esteem is essential for a successful life. Generations of children, especially minority kids, have been educated according to the theory that they lack self-esteem, and that this deficiency is central to any problems they may have in making their way in the world.

Well, guess what? A new research has found that self-esteem can be just as high among grade D students and drunk drivers as it is among Nobel Prize winners and former presidents. In fact, people with high self-esteem can engage in far more anti-social behavior than those with low self-esteem. “We used to believe that high self-esteem would cause all sorts of positive consequences and that if we raised self-esteem, people would do better in life,” a researcher said. “Mostly, the data have failed to support that.” Racists, street thugs (惡棍) and school bullies (惡霸) all have high scores on the self-esteem tests. And you can see why. If you think you’re highly gifted, you’re particularly offended if other people don’t treat you that way. So you hit out or commit crimes to defend your pride. After all, who are they to suggest that you could be doing something wrong? What do they know?

Self-esteem can also be an educational concern. College teachers are constantly complaining about the high self-esteem of their students. When every grade in the school is assessed so as to make the kid feel good rather than to give an accurate measure of his work, the kid can develop self-esteem dangerously unrelated to the truth. When he’s told he is getting a C grade in college, he can then get deeply offended or extremely angry. Weak professors give in to the pressure – hence, grade inflation, which results in their students’ vague touch with reality.

  Organic Farming

During thousands of years of huma civilization, the raising of animals and growing of plants have always been organic. Chemicals for farming first came up at the turn of the 20th century. Widespread use of chemicals began after World War II. In the 1950s and 60s farmers started using chemical fertilizers and pesticides (殺蟲劑). Recently, however, more and more farmers have been returning to organic farming.

In organic farming, farm products are produced in more natural ways. Crops, meat and other food are produced without chemicals. Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and growth hormones (激素) are forbidden. Farmers enrich the soil with natural fertilizers. They pull out weeds by hand. Hay and straw are put between the rows of plants to stop weeding. They rely on the natural enemies of pests to control pests. Animals are fed organically and can eat grass outdoors. Cows, for example, are kept in pastures (草場) and fields. Vegetables and fruit are also produced with organic methods.

Organic farming enjoys many advantages. For example, crop rotation can preserve the good qualities of soils. The growing of different crops can keep soils healthy and fertile. Organic farming is healthier for farm workers, and there are fewer remains of chemicals in food. In the long run, organic farms save energy and protect the environment. It can slow down global warming and reduce the pollution of ground water.

Meanwhile, there are some disadvantages. Organic food is more expensive. Organic products may cost up to 40% more. Production costs are higher as farmers need more workers, and the land output is much less. Marketing and distribution is not efficient because organic food is provided in smaller amount. Crop illness may happen very often. Besides, organic farming cannot produce enough food for the world’s population to survive. This could lead to starvation in countries that can produce enough food today.

Health Benefits of Honey with Milk

Honey and milk get along well. Since ancient times, this mix is known for its amazing health benefits.

  (1) Take a glass of honey with milk before you set out for your day in the morning, and you are guaranteed enough to get through the morning rush. Milk provides you the proteins required while honey helps you get the energy by breaking down these proteins. No wonder this drink is meant for all ages alike.

  (2) Milk is known for providing calcium (鈣), which, in right levels, helps in preventing bone diseases as we age. Research has indicated that honey does a good job of carrying nutrients (營養(yǎng)成分) in the food through the blood to various parts of the body. In particular, honey helps in the absorption of calcium, the vital part of milk.
