The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works.Told in language of great simplicity and power,it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal——a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts,in strikingly contemporary style, the classic thene of courage in the face of defeat,of personal triumph won from los.Written in 1952,this hugely successfully novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

After reading "A tale of two cities" "A tale of two cities" is one of Dickens's most important representative works. The novel profoundly exposed the society contradiction before the French Revolution, intensely attacks the aristocratic social clais dissolute and cruel, and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. The novel also described many magnificent scenes like the revolt people attacked Bastille and so on,which displayed people's great strength.
The novel has portrayed many different people. As an outstanding writer,in Dickens's work, the language skill is essential. Each kind of rhetoric technique, like the analogy, the exaggeration, the contrast, the humorous, and the taunt are handled skillfully, and the artistry of the work is also delivered the peak."A tale of two cities" has its difference with the general historical novel, its character and the main plot are all fictionalizes. With the broad real background of the French Revolution, the author take the fictional character Doctor Manette's experience as the main clue, interweaves the unjust charge, upholstery and so many techniques, causes the structure integrity and strictness, the plot winding anxious and rich of theatrical nature,it displayed the remarkable artistic skill.the style "A tale of two cities" is solemnity and melancholy, fills indignantion, but lacks the humor of the early works.

Asingular notion dawned upon me. I doubted not—never doubted – that if Mr.Reed had been alive he would have treated me kindly; and now, as I sat lookingat the white bed and overshadowed walls – occasionally also turning a fascinatedeye towards the dimly gleaming mirror—I began to recall what I had heard of deadmen, troubled in their graves by the violation of their last wishes, revisingthe earth to punish the perjured and avenge the oppressed; and I thought Mr.
Reed’s spirit, harassed by the wrong of his sister’s child, might quit itsabode—whether in the church vault or in the unknown world of the departed – andrise before me in this chamber. I wiped my tears and hushed my sobs, fearfullest any sign of violent grief might waken a preternatural voice to comfort me,or elicit from the gloom some haloed face, bending over me with strange pity. This idea, consolatory in theory I felt would be terrible if realized: with allmy might I endeavored to stifle it—I endeavored to be firm. Shaking my hair frommy eyes, I lifted my head and tried to look boldly around the dark room; at thismoment a light gleamed on the wall. Was it, I asked myself, a ray from the moonpenetrating some aperture in the blind? No; moonlight was still, and thisstirred; while I gazed, it glided up to the ceiling and quivered over my head. Ican now conjecture readily that this streak of light was, in all likelihood, agleam from a lantern carried by some one acrothe lawn; but then, prepared as mymind was for horror, shaken as my nerves were by agitation.
I thought the swift-darting beam was a herald of some coming vision fromanother world. My heart beat thick, my head grew hot; a sound filled my ears, which I deemed the rushing of wings; something seemed near me; I was oppressed, suffocated: endurance broke down; I rushed to the door and shook the lock indesperate effort. Steps came running along the outer passage; the key turned,Bessie and Abbot entered.

During this term, I have read a novel The Red and the Black. The novel was written by the French writer Stendhal in the 19th century. Marie·Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, was one of the critical realism French writers in the 19th century . The military and theatrical worlds of the First French Empire were a revelation to Beyle. Known for his acute analysis of his characters’ psychology and reflection of society, he is considered one of the earliestand foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839). Stendhal laid down for himself in a diary entry of May 1804:“regard everything I’ve read to date about man as a prediction; believe only what I have seen for myself. Joy, happiness, fame, all is upon it.” Futurity call it realism creation method. In France, Stendhal was the first litterateur to reveal corruption of the bourgeoisie through literature.
The novel marks the beginning of realism. André Gide said that The Red and the Black was a novel ahead of its time, that it was a novel for readers in the twentieth century. In Stendhal’s time, prose novels included dialogue and omniscient narrator descriptions; his great contribution to literary technique was describing the psychologies (feelings, thoughts, inner monologues) of the characters, resultantly he is considered the creator of the psychological novel.

Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:
We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.
We remember her pursuit of justice. It’s like a companion with the goodness. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodneon one side and must check the badneon the other side.
We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God’s feet. Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.
We also remember her striving for life, her toughneand her confidence…
When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.
Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.
This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.
It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.
Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of revolting the ruthleoppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden.

She could not get close to nature, can not be friends like before play. In the shadow of the shadow of death, Anne only keep a diary to get through tough every day. For her, the diary as her friends, her only friends can rely on and talk. She wrote in her diary a lot, there are silent on the racial discrimination complaint, more of the outside world, the natural yearning for thinking about life.
From her diary, I can imagine she was helpless, fear, but a more leisurely and calm. This is a great girl.
After reading the "Diary of Anne Frank", my heart is very heavy. Nazi racial discrimination, maiming and killing innocent pretty much the same as Anne's children. War is always nasty, it makes human experience is a market catastrophe.
Thank you "Diary of Anne Frank" and let people see the ugliness of war, to get people to think about and condolences for the unfortunate people.
Do not like history repeating itself, pray for world peace forever.

Misfortune. This makes us feel shamed. Every now and then I wonder whether there is a method that can remove the devil from our hearts. In this way, the evil part of me won't feel shamed, meanwhile, the good part of me won't get happiness from others'
misfortune. After reading this novella entitled "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", I think it's better to shut down this bad idea. This novella is written by the famous Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson. It is about a London lawyer named John Gabriel Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward Hyde. Dr. Henry Jekyll was a scientist who was always considered as a serious, hard-working doctor. Behind this character, however, he was an active, fun-loving young man-abouttown. He had spent most of his life trying to remove the devil from his heart which was not fitting for a man of his stature. After much thought, he finally decided to create a drug that could give each side of his character it's own separate face and body. Then, he bravely drank the drug and successfully transformed himself into the smaller, younger, cruel, remorseless, evil Edward Hyde.
Dr. Jekyll enjoyed his secret very much--but not for ever after. As time went by, Mr. Hyde grew in power. After taking the drug repetitively, Dr. Jekyll no longer needed to use the drug to relief his devil.Eventually, Mr. Hyde grew so strong that Dr. Jekyll had to rely on the drug to remain himself. He first injured a child in street, then beat Sir Danvers to death for no reason. Realizing he would soon become Hyde forever, Dr. Jekyll left behind a confession and commit suicide. Generally speaking, every man has two sides to his character. Just like Dr. Jekyll was a serious, hard-working doctor which concealed a irresponsible man who pleasured around underneath. Dr. Jekyll had noticed it quiet well, but he should have known that a normal people could not be two people live uncomfortably together in the same body.
It sounds more like "dual personalities". Feeling complacent about his creation, Dr. Jekyll didn't notice that he was trapped. Before the experiment, Dr. Jekyll was just a double-dealer. And after it, he became a person with dual personalities. Each personality wanted to control the body. Unfortunately, good didn't prevail over evil. Dr. Jekyll grew weak while Mr. Hyde grew powerful. Actually, the two sides of a person have well defined power and responsibility, mutual coordination and restraint. They know the appropriate time and situation to behave themselves. You can be serious at work with a character likes Dr. Jekyll and have your private life as crazy as you want.
This is nothing to be ashamed of, but Dr. Jekyll didn't realize it at that time. During the one-month internship, I have noticed that there are a great numbers of teachers wear a double face. They treat students strictly, meanwhile, they are quite friendly with their collogues and parents of students. This makes their life much easier. Everyone plays different roles in different situations. We needn't to shame about it. The double-dealers can always gain advantage from both sides and live well. When Dr. Jekyll took the drug and devided into two person, this tragedy is waiting to happen. The two person are quite simply. Dr. Jekyll shared no effort to do good and Mr. Hyde committed all manner of evil.
Through the death of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, the author tried to expound his point: If you can't rein in your devil, you would be punished at last. In the unknown corner of people's deepest heart, good coexists with evil. In the story of deers and wolves, people simply thought that deers could live better without wolves.
As a matter of fact, deers could not live without wolves. They maintained an appropriate balance in the forest. But for the chasing of wolves, deers couldn't be strong and healthy. Similarly, when separated, the good side of Dr. Jekyll became weaker and weaker. Instead, the evil side of him became stronger and stronger without the restraint of the good side. But the evil side, Mr. Hyde couldn't live without Dr. Jekyll, because they shared a body. So when Dr. Jekyll committed suicide, Mr. Hyde dead, too. It is too late for Dr. Jekyll to realize that having two characters is nothing to be ashamed of. But I learned a lot from this novella. There is a "Jekyll" and a "Hyde" In everybody. I will face up to my desires and try to strengthen heart for good to defeat the devil. Nothing is difficult in the world for one who sets his mind to do it.
